Bioturbation, the process of mixing that results from benthic macrofauna burrowing, feeding and reworking, has profound effects on both physical and geochemical proprieties of the surficial sediments (Aller, 1982). In fact, the rates of organic matter decomposition, as well as the biogeochemical cycles such as those of carbon and nutrients are mediated by bioturbation (Berner, 1980). In addition, fluxes of chemicals at the sediment-water interface are deeply influenced by the movement of interstitial fluids induced by mixing. Added by: Dott. Alessandro Meggiato |
