Abstract
The integrated use of laboratory and field methods is nowadays recognized as the most suitable approach for assessing the occurrence or absence of ecological impairments in coastal marine and transitional environments.
In this context, a battery of laboratory single-species toxicity bioassays is becoming of fundamental importance to assess water and sediment quality as a result of chemical pollution. Point and non-point sources of chemical pollutants affect the environmental quality of the Lagoon of Venice. In this ecosystem, a battery of reliable and sensitive toxicity bioassays can be used to monitor sediment quality, partly contributing to the proper management and recovery of polluted areas.
